The Colombian arrived at Santiago Bernabeu with much hype after an explosive 2014 FIFA World Cup.

"We are very happy to have completed this transfer", Bayern Executive Board Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said in a statement.

In what looks set to be a summer of transfer surprises, Bayern Munich have pulled off the shock signing of Real Madrid attacking midfielder James Rodríguez.

The agreement also includes an option for Bayern to buy the 25-year-old Colombian playmaker.

James will be moving to Germany on a two-year loan deal with option to buy.

But things started to go wrong with the arrival of Rafa Benitez as Real boss. Their key creative forces in the front line are 33 year-old Arjen Robben and 34 year-old Franck Ribery.

So naturally, news of the Colombian's move has taken a number of people by surprise.

Rodriguez suffered an injury while on international duty early in the 2015-16 season, however, and never got back on track. The 24-year-old started just 19 games, scoring 20 goals - more than each of his teammates aside from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Rodriguez wants to leave Real in search of regular game time after he made just 13 La Liga starts under Zinedine Zidane last term.

The 20-time English champions agreed a £75m fee to sign Everton striker Romelu Lukaku at the weekend.

Last season, Zidane continued to use Rodriguez fleetingly, but this did not diminish his effectiveness. He didn't even make the substitutes' bench for the Champions League final win over Juventus in June.

They're impressive numbers for any player, but James' time in Madrid can only be viewed with regret based on his potential.

There was no-one in the first queue, while the second queue was getting longer with every passing week. "Without a doubt, we've increased the quality of our squad with this transfer once again". Though James is versatile - capable of playing both out on the left and through the centre - the Bavarians have some serious competition for starting spots.

Despite the returns of Marcos Llorente, Jesus Vallejo and Borja Mayoral to fill some gaps in the squad with youthful backup, Carvajal's flank remains unattended.
