The move came a few hours after the Red Sox activated third baseman Pablo Sandoval from his rehab assignment with the PawSox and designated him for assignment.

In 32 games this season, Sandoval is batting.212 with four home runs and 12 runs batted in and an OPS of.622. He has appeared in just 161 games since then, hitting.237 with 14 homers.

Hours before the All-Star Game, commissioner Rob Manfred noted concern that teams were using the 10-day disabled list too liberally, so the league is watching. It's difficult to see this offense as anything less than potent, but they're still waiting to truly break out. The Venezuelan was a force to be reckoned with during the first seven seasons of his career, in which he posted 946 hits and a 123 OPS+ for the San Francisco Giants.

The problem is that the Sox can't just snap their fingers and keep him on the DL.

Again, though: even if MLB found another DL stint for Sandoval permissible, why would Sandoval want to keep on with the Sox? He struggled with his weight and violated the Red Sox's social media policy - and that was just in the first year of his deal.

The Sox can't send Sandoval to Triple-A as an active player without his permission either, because he has five years of service time. There is $49.5 million remaining on the deal.

At this point, the Sox are simply dawdling. In short, he has been dominant (and, yes, that includes his loss to the Yankees back in April, when he went 8 IP, allowing 8 H, 3 R, and 0 BB, while striking out 10).

Not one, but two hot-corner prospects are coming up behind him in Michael Chavis and Rafael Devers.
