Theresa May did not raise the issue of Gibraltar's sovereignty during her meeting with the king of Spain despite the two countries not seeing "eye to eye" on the issue, Downing Street said.

The Dean of the Abbey, John Hall, told the Spanish royals that Westminster Abbey is where monarchs have their coronations - Queen Elizabeth's was in June 1953 - and many great men and women are buried there.

But the government of Gibraltar said the king's focus on a dialogue between London and Madrid was "undemocratic".

While her government grapples with Brexit proceedings, the British monarch stressed that "whatever challenges arise" both her country and Spain will prosper.

Other Spanish companies are boosting operations in the UK, including infrastructure company Sacyr, officials said.

As he arrived in London, the flag of Gibraltar was on display outside the Houses of Parliament.

Their packed itinerary includes having afternoon tea with Prince Charles and Camilla at their home, Clarence House, and a state banquet at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday evening, which Prince Harry is expected to attend.

The prestigious occasion is reportedly in hope of improving relations over Brexit and Gibraltar.

On Thursday, Harry joined King Felipe and Queen Letizia in a somber ceremony as they paid their respects to those lost in war.

While Kate must bow to blood princesses, the Countess of Wessex, Sophie, must curtsy to Kate, even when William is not with her.

Princess Anne was pictured welcoming King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain to a lavish dinner hosted by the princess and her husband, Vice-Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence.

Tonight, the Spanish royals are set to dine with the Royal Family.

This latest look comes on the heels of a similar styling trick from earlier this month, when Letizia wore Zara's blush pink flounced hem top and trousers.

On the second day of the state visit she insisted the two nations would maintain the "closest possible relationship" after Brexit.

But the King warned that the UK's decision to leave the EU has "generated uncertainty and doubts for our companies, businesses and especially small and medium sized enterprises".

"But the work and determination of our governments, authorities and citizens have relegated such events to the past". The royal visit will last three days.

Felipe at 6ft 5in towered over the Queen and he kissed his distant relative on the cheek and hand when they met. He also received the customary present - a silver framed pair of photographs of his royal hosts.
